A vertical sundial , as the name implies, has its dial mounted vertically, usually on the wall of a building. in distinction to a horizontal dial which has its dial plate placed horizontally, either on the ground or on a pedestal.

The is a modern dial by Silas Higgon and is probably a replacement for an early dial on the old pillar. It shows the hours from V to VII subdivided into halves and quarters, and, on an outer scale, into 5 minute intervals. An equation of time graph is engraved on the south side and there is a 16 point compass rose. The dial plate carries the inscription: "St. Mary's Church Westbury, 1996". It has a decorative gnomon.
