A vertical sundial , as the name implies, has its dial mounted vertically, usually on the wall of a building. in distinction to a horizontal dial which has its dial plate placed horizontally, either on the ground or on a pedestal.

This sixteen-sided horizontal dial shows the hours from IIII to VIII and the half hour markers end in a fleur de lys. A compass rose surrounds the root of the gnomon.

The dial was made in 1717 by Daniel Blackman of Brockton(a neighbouring village). He is not so far known to have made any other dials but he took a lot of care over this one, including on a separate scale the equivalent time of noon at seven locations around the world. Corrosion has obliterated some of them but one which is still legible is Port Royal (Jamaica).

The dial is mounted on a rather fragile looking sandstone column.
