A vertical sundial , as the name implies, has its dial mounted vertically, usually on the wall of a building. in distinction to a horizontal dial which has its dial plate placed horizontally, either on the ground or on a pedestal.

This wooden vertical south dial is overhung by the eaves and guttering which probably limits its usefulness, especially in the summer, except in the middle of the day. There was probably more of the gnomon than can be seen today, part having rusted away. It shows hours from VI to VI, not subdivided. The dial plate is cracked on the afternoon side.
