A vertical sundial , as the name implies, has its dial mounted vertically, usually on the wall of a building. in distinction to a horizontal dial which has its dial plate placed horizontally, either on the ground or on a pedestal.

This old cube dial has lost its east and west gnomons and somebody has rotated it through 90 degrees on its column so that the north dial faces roughly west. The north dial is the best preserved and shows some hours which could not possibly be recorded on a dial facing in this direction. Some of the Roman numerals appears to be reversed, e.g.VI pm is engraved as IV.
